Age is just a number

Okay I get it. At 61 I’m “old” – chronologically speaking.

My mother used to say she didn’t feel any different or older than when she was a young woman – until she looked in the mirror. I honestly don’t feel “old” but I got a wake-up call when I hit my sixth decade. While I may not feel ancient, employers, marketers and anyone under 30 thinks I am. True, aging takes its toll on a body, but like a good wine, I like to think I’ve gotten better with age.

I was watching a segment on the Today Show this morning. Their beauty “expert” shared tips and products for women as they age from their 20s into their 30s, 40s and 50s. What about 60s and beyond? Are we truly a lost cause – should we just plan to shrivel away? You don’t have to look any further than Philosophy’s line of skin care products for women to understand that yes, those of us over 60 are pretty much regarded as a lost cause. Their products have wonderful names like “Full of Promise,” “Purity Made Simple” and “Here Comes the Sun.” But then there are those designed for aging skin, which include: “Hope in a Jar” and “When Hope is Not Enough.” Not to worry, they don’t forget the elderly; for us they created a line of products called “Miracle Workers.” Now that stings.

Which leads me to why I’m launching this new blog: Hey I’m not dead yet! Older, definitely more creased and flabbier but actually thinner, more fit and more confident than I was in my youth. I will air my frustrations with how the “elderly” are treated. And among my tirades I’ll share my tips for navigating the aging journey
